The Magistrates Courts

There are 7 sitting Magistrates Courts, 6 of which are located in Victoria and 1 is located in Praslin. The Victoria Magistrates Courts are located next to the Stad Popiler car park in Victoria.

The head of the magistracy is the "A" Court Senior Magistrate. Other officers of the magistracy are referred to as Magistrates. It is the Chief Justice who appoints the Senior Magistrate and other Magistrates.

The Magistrates Courts deal with less serious criminal offences and civil suits. The Senior Magistrate may impose custodial sentences of up to 10 years. Magistrates may impose custodial sentences of up to 7 years. In civil matters, the Senior Magistrate may entertain claims up to SR 350,000 in value whereas a Magistrate may entertain claims up to SR 250,000 in value.
